Keep an Eye Out for These Motorcycle Road Hazards

When people consider the dangers of riding a motorcycle, most first think of the lack of protection that riders have, as riders don’t have the benefit of airbags, seatbelts, and a frame between themselves and the roads. Still others consider the massive size difference between motorcycles and passenger vehicles, or the fact that motorcycles are far less stable than their vehicular counterparts. These are all very real risks for motorcycle riders, who, because of their smaller size and lack of protection, are much more likely to sustain serious injuries in the event of a collision with another vehicle. A less well-known risk, however, are the road hazards that motorcyclists must face.

Rough Roads 

Most of us have driven on rough roads at some point, annoyed at the bouncing and discomfort that it causes. Crumbling asphalt, potholes, and other road defects are, however, much more than an annoyance for motorcyclists, as any bumps, whether caused by road work, general disrepair, or attempts at resurfacing can cause a person to lose control of his or her motorcycle. To help avoid these kinds of accidents, motorcyclists should be sure to check their routes ahead of time if possible, keeping an eye out for signs of construction or repair.

Wet Roadways 

Driving on a wet surface is dangerous for any vehicle occupant, but is especially perilous for motorcyclists, whose vehicles are a lot lighter than the average passenger car. This, combined with the instability of a vehicle that only has two wheels instead of four, means that it is much more likely that a rider will lose control when driving on a wet or icy surface. When combined with water, the mud and oil that are already present on most roadways can become deadly for motorcyclists. Even wet leaves can prove dangerous. Slippery asphalt isn’t the only thing that riders need to keep an eye out for, as any metal surfaces, like railroad crossings and grates can also become dangerous when wet.

Wildlife 

While striking a small animal when driving a car won’t cause much damage to the vehicle, hitting an animal, or even swerving to avoid one when driving a motorcycle can be catastrophic. Unfortunately, there isn’t really a way to predict when an animal will dart out into the road. The only thing motorcyclists can do is keep a sharp eye out for wildlife, especially in areas well-known for animal crossings.

Bridges 

Bridges also pose a risk to motorcyclists for a number of reasons. Bridges tend to be icier than other parts of the road, posing a risk of skidding in cold weather. Most bridges also have road joints on both sides that help the asphalt expand and contract without warping. Traveling over these joints at high speeds can be dangerous for motorcyclists, who risk a loss of control. Even high winds can be perilous for motorcyclists traveling on bridges, as they lack the protection and stability of a vehicle frame.
